Celeron N5100 spec
Celeron N5100 is a 4-core / 4-thread chip from early 2021:
- Cores: 4 cores / 4 threads
- Base clock: 1.1GHz
- Boost clock: 2.8GHz
- TDP: 6W
At launch that was fine for an entry notebook. In 2026 the picture is different.
Where it hits a wall
Apps now want more CPU than they used to. Celeron N5100 often feels slow here:
- Microsoft Teams or Zoom with screen share
- Chrome or Edge with many tabs
- Editing high-res phone photos
- High-quality video playback
Those jobs are normal now. If they stutter, the day feels heavy.
Why it feels slow
Low clocks
There are a few reasons. The main one is clock speed.
- Base clock: 1.1GHz
- Boost clock: 2.8GHz
Base and boost are both modest.
A heavy app does not jump from 1.1GHz to 2.8GHz in one step. There is a short wait on the way up. That wait is the sticky, laggy feel.
Low clocks also mean low power and low heat, so it is not only a minus. It is still a reason the machine feels slow.
Often little RAM too
Many N5100 PCs ship with 8GB RAM. That is low for 2026. On current Windows 11, 12GB is a floor for comfort, 16GB is better.
If RAM is easy to add, add it. If not, a new PC is the cleaner path.
Vs a cheap current CPU
Celeron N5100 was a cheap-PC chip. Compare it with Intel N100, another cheap-PC chip people talk about now.

N5100 is still 4 cores and does not look terrible on paper. A current entry chip is about 1.8× to 2.3× the score, so N5100 looks old now.
At N100 class, browsing, video, Word, and Excel for typical office work run close to smooth.

Should you replace it?
Replace if
- You do a lot of video calls
- You work with many browser tabs
- You edit photos or light video
- You want AI features
Keep it if
- Mail and word processing are the core
- Browser use is light
- Video watching is the main job
Very light use can still run on N5100. Extra tabs, or Excel plus a video lesson, and it starts to wobble.
An N100 PC in the JP about ¥30,000–¥40,000 band can do many tabs, Zoom, and light video edit. Worth a look if you are replacing.
It is not unusable. Paying that JP band to make daily work smoother is still a fair trade.

If I raise an N5100 PC from 8GB to 16GB RAM, or buy a new N100 PC, which is smoother for a video call plus many tabs?
A new N100 PC is smoother. Extra RAM helps tab lag. Call load and slow app switches come from the low clocks (1.1GHz base, 2.8GHz boost), so RAM alone does not fix them. N100 scores about 1.8× N5100, so CPU-heavy use wants a new machine.
N100 scores about 1.8× N5100. Does browsing and Office feel that much faster?
Not the same as the bench ratio. A lot of browsing and Office is RAM and storage, not only CPU math. Right after you open many tabs, or when you switch apps, clock speed shows, and that part can feel close to the ratio.
If I buy an N100 PC, should I pick the about-¥30,000 band or the about-¥50,000 band?
Many tabs plus Office at once: pick the about-¥50,000 band. The CPU is N100 either way. The cheaper band is often 8GB RAM and 256GB SSD. The higher band is often 16GB RAM and 512GB SSD or more. Most of the gap is RAM and storage. If multitask matters, the higher band is less regret.
